classwork for mrs. steele
ch10
i think when they said it is a sin to kill a mockingbird it means that it is not right to accuse or hurt something that only does good. when they said this i thought about boo radley as the mockingbird he hasnt done anything to hurt people yet he is in constant abuse by the kids. everyone judges him although he has done nothing wrong.

ch11
i belive that physically Jem had more power but Mrs. Dubose would always have more power in the community. Because Mrs. Dubose had a direct route to Atticus she would always have more power then any kid would.

ch12 and 13
i belive that Calpurnia gained the respect of the children by bringing them to church. Calpurnia always used to cook in the kitchen which was the Finch's house but when they were at her house there was a power shift because they were in a place were she was in charge. the kids gain a better understanding of the black cummunity. Going to a negro church may alter theres preception of when people call Atticus a N-lover. they may now figure that negros are not bad.

ch 11

In ch 11 Jem and Scout grow bored of their nieghborhood and travel to look for better places to go. However in doing so they must pass Mrs. Dubose house. Mrs. Dubose is a mean old lady that insults Jem and Scout whenever thtey pass by her porch. Although atticus can stand the old lady and act like a gentelmen one day Jem loses controll and ruins he garden. There after Jem had to read to Mrs. Dubose every day 2 hours for 2 months. Finnaly after Jems time is up Mrs. Dubose dies and leaves jem a gift she knew he wouldnt like. There is a moral in this chapter that sometimes you have to deal with thinkgs you dont like and hold your head high. If you give into temptations and lose your cool.

escapade (n.): reckless prank

ch 10

In this chapter Jem and Scout were questioning their dads abilities to do anything. At first it seemed as if Atticus was not special in any way, but then in a lifethreating situation a secrete is reveald. Jem and Scout learn that Atticus was a sharpshooting champion in his time and was called "one shot". Being an expert marksmen is no easy task and Atticus in this chapter examples the task with ease. This helps to prove the pattern that atticus is no ordinary father which is shown in recent chapters. This makes me think if Atticus has any other surprises or mabey even a few skeletons in his closet.

vocabulary:feeble

ch 7 and 8

I wonder why jem cried at the end of chapter 7 and why mr. Radley cemented the tree. The neighborghood seemed very relaxed about the fire, are they used to having fires? i think that boo radley covering scout in that blanket really showed a change in charecter, it makes him seem more kind.

ch 5 and 6 reactions

i question why they have to keep harrasing boo radley. also at the end of ch. 6 it said jems cot was trembling i wonder if that means something disturbed him?
